Frequently Asked Questions

What is sawdust spawn?
Sawdust spawn is mushroom mycelium grown on sterilized hardwood sawdust. It’s one of the most versatile and cost-effective ways to grow mushrooms and is commonly used for logs, stumps, wood chips, mulch, coffee grounds, and pasteurized agricultural byproducts.
What can I grow with Sawdust Spawn?
Our sawdust spawn works well for:

Log cultivation (shiitake, lion’s mane, maitake, chicken of the woods, reishi, oysters, nameko, bricktop)
Outdoor beds (king stropharia/winecaps, blewit)
Wood chips & mulch (king stropharia/winecaps, blewit)
Coffee grounds & pasteurized ag waste (oyster)
Stumps and naturalized garden areas (oyster, reishi, cauliflower)
How is sawdust spawn different from plug spawn?
Sawdust spawn is ideal for larger projects like log stacks, totems, beds, and bulk inoculations.

Plug spawn is more beginner-friendly for drilling logs.

If you want speed and coverage, sawdust spawn wins.
How much sawdust spawn do I need?
That depends on your project:

Logs: ~½–1 cup per log (depending on diameter and method)
Outdoor beds: Heavier inoculation = faster results
Wood chips/mulch: Thicker spawn layers perform better

More spawn generally means faster colonization and less contamination risk.
Can beginners use sawdust spawn?
Yes — especially for outdoor beds and wood chip projects.
Log inoculation with sawdust spawn is also beginner-friendly once you understand drilling or totem methods.
Do I need to sterilize or pasteurize materials before using sawdust spawn?
Logs & fresh wood: No
Wood chips: As long as they are fresh, no
Straw, ag waste, coffee grounds: Yes — pasteurization is recommended to reduce contamination

Clean materials = happier mycelium!
How long does it take to see mushrooms?
It depends on species and method:

Outdoor beds: Often fruit seasonally after establishment, about 1 - 3 months • Logs: Typically 6–18 months before first fruiting, then recurring for years • Wood chips & mulch: Sometimes fruit within a few months under good conditions

Patience is part of the magic.
How long can I store sawdust spawn?
Sawdust spawn can be stored in the refrigerator for 6 months to up to a year for best results. Keep it sealed and cold until use. Exceptions are King Stropharia/Garden Giant, tropical oyster species (pink and flamingo), paddy straw, almond portabella. Those should be kept at room temperature.
How is your sawdust spawn packaged?
All of our sawdust spawn is packaged in biodegradable filter bags, allowing the mycelium to breathe while staying protected.
Is your sawdust spawn organic?
Yes. Our spawn is produced in our certified organic lab using clean materials and strict quality control.
What if my sawdust spawn arrives contaminated or doesn’t perform?
Contamination is rare, but we stand behind our spawn.
If something looks off when your order arrives — or if you’re unsure during your grow — send us photos. We are very customer-service driven and happy to help troubleshoot or replace when appropriate.
Do you offer bulk discounts on sawdust spawn?
