Wine Cap (Stropharia rugosoannulata), also known as King Stropharia or the Garden Giant, is one of the easiest mushrooms you can grow. It thrives in hardwood woodchips and mulch beds, making it a favorite for both beginners and experienced cultivators.
Part of what makes Winecap so beginner-friendly is how easy it is to recognize, it has a bold, distinctive look that’s hard to mistake for anything else. Once established, it rapidly colonizes woodchips, often producing a light flush in spring followed by an abundant harvest in fall.
Beyond producing delicious mushrooms, Winecap plays a powerful role in the garden, breaking down woody material and building rich, living soil, making it a perfect addition to garden beds and permaculture systems.
Build Rich Soil. Grow Better Plants. Harvest Mushrooms.
Garden Giant Living Mulch turns ordinary woodchips into living, breathing soil.
This isn’t just mulch.
It’s a soil-building engine powered by Winecap (Stropharia rugosoannulata) - one of the easiest and most rewarding mushrooms you can grow outdoors.
Just spread it in your garden beds, around fruit trees, or along pathways. Water it. Let the mycelium do the heavy lifting.
What It Does for Your Garden
🌱 Builds Real Soil
Breaks down woodchips and mulch into dark, nutrient-rich humus that feeds your plants naturally.
💧 Improves Water Retention
Thick mycelial networks help hold moisture in the soil, reducing drought stress.
🪱 Attracts Worms & Boosts Biology
Creates a thriving underground ecosystem that supports stronger root systems.
🌎 Reduces Erosion & Runoff
Mycelium binds soil particles together, keeping nutrients where they belong - in your garden.
🌼 Supports Pollinators
Healthier soil → stronger plants → more blooms.
And Yes… You Get Mushrooms Too

🌱 How to Plant Your Living Mulch
These are fully colonized woodchips - not sawdust.
That means the hard work is already done.
You have two easy options:
Option 1: Add Directly to Your Garden
-
Spread the inoculated woodchips 1–3 inches thick around plants, trees, raised beds, or along pathways.
-
Water thoroughly.
-
Cover with a thin layer of straw to help retain moisture.
-
Keep lightly moist, especially during dry periods.
That’s it. The mycelium will spread, break down organic matter, and begin building rich soil beneath the surface.
Option 2 (Recommended): Expand Your Culture
For larger areas, you can multiply your bag.
-
Lay down a fresh layer of hardwood woodchips.
-
Evenly distribute the inoculated woodchips throughout the new chips.
-
Mix lightly or layer like lasagna.
-
Water well.
-
Cover with straw for moisture retention.
The mycelium will colonize the fresh woodchips over time, expanding your soil-building system naturally.
Garden Giant thrives in hardwood woodchips and mulch beds and typically fruits in spring and fall once established. Perfect for garden beds, orchard rows, and permaculture systems.
