Expand Your Mushroom Culture Library

Looking for a new mushroom strain for your lab, farm, or cultivation research? Mushroom Mountain Pure Culture Slants provide a clean, viable culture from our extensive collection of cultivated and wild-isolated mushroom strains.

Each culture is prepared in a sterile 50 mL centrifuge tube containing approximately 25 mL of malt extract agar. Our cultures are maintained at generation G-5 or lower, making them suitable for culture expansion, cultivation, strain preservation, and research.

Choose from dozens of gourmet, medicinal, native, wild-isolated, and specialty mushroom cultures collected and maintained by Mushroom Mountain.

🔬 Best For

  • Mushroom growers with sterile laboratory equipment
  • Commercial mushroom farms
  • Experienced home cultivators
  • Culture expansion and strain preservation
  • Mycological research
  • Growers building a culture library

⚠️ Lab Experience Required

This is a pure mushroom culture intended for laboratory use and is not a ready-to-grow mushroom product.

Working with a culture slant requires sterile technique and appropriate laboratory equipment. If you're new to mushroom cultivation and simply want to grow mushrooms at home, we recommend starting with mushroom spawn or a fruiting kit instead.

🍄 What's Included

Each slant includes:

  • One selected mushroom culture
  • Sterile 50 mL plastic centrifuge tube with twist cap
  • Approximately 25 mL malt extract agar
  • Antibiotic added to help limit bacterial growth during storage
  • Waterproof identification label
  • Strain and generation information
  • Storage medium information
  • Parafilm seal around the screw cap

🧫 How Our Culture Slants Are Prepared

Our slants are made to order weekly and allowed to colonize for approximately one week at 28°C (82°F) before shipment.

Each culture is carefully labeled, sealed with Parafilm around the screw cap, and packaged in a zip-top bag for shipment.

❄️ Storage

Refrigerate your culture slant upon arrival.

When properly maintained under refrigeration, culture slants can remain viable for several years, making them an excellent way to preserve strains and maintain a long-term mushroom culture collection.

💡 Mushroom Mountain Tip

Don't repeatedly open your master culture to make transfers. Use your slant to establish working cultures, then work from those whenever possible. Keeping your original culture clean and refrigerated gives you a reliable culture to return to when needed.

📦 Made to Order

Pure Culture Slants are prepared weekly and require time for the culture to colonize before shipment. Please allow additional processing time compared with ready-to-ship growing supplies.

What is a mushroom pure culture slant?
A pure culture slant is living mushroom mycelium growing on sterile agar inside a sealed tube. It is used to preserve, transfer, and expand a mushroom culture under sterile laboratory conditions.
Is this ready to grow mushrooms?
No. This is a laboratory culture, not spawn or a fruiting kit. You will need sterile technique and appropriate laboratory equipment to transfer and expand the culture before using it for cultivation.
Who should purchase a Pure Culture Slant?
These cultures are best for commercial mushroom farms, experienced home cultivators with laboratory setups, researchers, and growers who want to expand or preserve specific mushroom strains.
What comes in each culture slant?
Each order includes one selected mushroom culture in a sterile 50 mL centrifuge tube containing approximately 25 mL of malt extract agar. The tube is labeled with strain, generation, and storage-medium information and sealed with Parafilm.
What generation are the cultures?
Mushroom Mountain offers these cultures at generation G-5 or lower.
How should I store my culture slant?
Refrigerate the culture upon arrival. Properly refrigerated slants can remain viable for several years.
Do I need a laboratory to use this product?
Yes. You should have an appropriate clean workspace and understand sterile culture-transfer techniques. These cultures are not intended to be opened and handled in ordinary household conditions.
Can I use the culture to make more mushroom spawn?
Yes. Experienced cultivators can expand the culture onto agar and subsequently use clean culture to produce liquid culture, grain spawn, or other inoculum appropriate to their cultivation process.
Why is there an antibiotic in the agar?
The malt extract agar contains an antibiotic to help limit bacterial growth during storage. It does not eliminate the need for sterile technique when working with the culture.
Are the cultures made ahead of time?
Slants are made to order weekly and are allowed to colonize for approximately one week at 28°C (82°F) before shipment.
What does “wild type” mean in the strain selection?
Wild-type selections originated from mushrooms collected in the wild rather than from established commercial strains. Many of Mushroom Mountain's selections include information about where the original specimen was collected.
Can beginners use culture slants?
Culture slants are not the best starting point for someone completely new to mushroom cultivation. Beginners who want to grow mushrooms should generally start with mushroom spawn or a ready-to-fruit kit before moving into sterile culture work.
