Devil's Urn is a cup fungus that fruits in early spring, right around the same time as morel mushrooms. You could say that the devil's urn is an indicator species- as in, once you see them, it is time to go looking for morels.
They fruit on a variety of hardwood logs and sticks, and are always found on the ground, which allows for plenty of moisture to support these woody little fungi.
Are they edible? Yes. I have eaten them before, stuffed with cheese. And yes, they taste like cardboard.
Why do we have them listed on our website? First, I think they are very cool fungi- and they are nutritious. You can add them to stews and soups, and then remove them once your dish is cooked. Kind of like a bay leaf.
Approximately 100 plugs by weight.
