Red Reishi  - (Ganoderma lucidum) - This is red capped type of Reishi. iRecent studies have found that Ganoderma lucidum is a European species, and Ganoderma multipileum is an Oriental species that has been used for over 2000 years. This mushroom is beautifully lacquered with almost entirely red new growth and white tips.

We cultivate this one in bags indoors and keep the bags shut until they have stretched a bit, then roll down the sides to let them flatten. A potent medicinal mushroom, Reishi's powers range from sugar regulation for diabetics to cancer fighting properties.

Outdoors this mushroom grows on oak, cherry and maple logs, half buried the best, but can adapt to other hardwoods. We also fruit this one indoors very easily on sterilized sawdust, fruiting in 14-21 days! This mushroom is corky and bitter, so we prefer to dry them fresh and grind them up in a blender to make a fluffy fiber, then make extracts.

Edibility and Taste: Bitter, corky texture
Grows On: Hardwood logs and sawdust: oak, elm, maple, sycamore, beech, plum, peach, mimosa
Fruiting Temps: 60-85F
Availability: Year-round

Golden Reishi  - (Ganoderma curtisii) - Found in the wild right here in South Carolina, this species of reishi  is native to temperate climates of the USA, and this is the prettiest we have found. This mushroom is beautifully lacquered with brilliant yellow new growth and white tips, like the sun setting perfectly, this mushroom is living art.

A potent medicinal mushroom, Reishi's powers range from sugar regulation for diabetics to cancer fighting properties. This strain is proving to be a potent natural antibiotic as well, exhibiting inhibition against Strep and Staph, making it useful for throat sprays and soaps or cosmetics.

Hemlock Reishi  - (Ganoderma tsugae) - Found locally in the old growth forests of North Carolina on dying hemlock trees. The fruiting bodies get quite large, with bands of red, orange and white lacquered tops. The bottom fertile surface of this polypore is creamy white.

NOTE: We do not recommend planting this mushroom in healthy hemlock trees. It is great though to give a sick hemlock tree another chance and a purpose, and plug it up with this fungus.
