Fast, Efficient Mushroom Culture for Grain & Culture Expansion

Liquid culture (LC) is living mushroom mycelium suspended in a sterile, nutrient-rich liquid solution. It provides a fast and convenient way for mushroom growers to inoculate sterile grain or expand a culture for future cultivation.

Choose from Mushroom Mountain's collection of gourmet, medicinal, and specialty mushroom strains, including several cultures originally isolated from wild mushrooms collected throughout the Southeast.

Each order contains a 10 mL syringe of commercial-grade mushroom culture in supplemented liquid medium, ready for use in your cultivation workflow.

🔬 Best For

  • Home mushroom cultivators
  • Commercial mushroom farms
  • Grain spawn production
  • Liquid culture expansion
  • Growers with sterile technique experience
  • Expanding your mushroom culture collection

⚠️ Sterile Technique Required

Liquid culture is not a ready-to-fruit mushroom product.

It is intended for inoculating sterile grain or for further liquid culture expansion. Clean handling and sterile technique are important whenever working with liquid cultures to reduce the risk of contamination.

If you're simply looking to grow mushrooms without doing sterile culture work, mushroom spawn or a ready-to-fruit kit will be a better starting point.

🍄 Why Growers Use Liquid Culture

Fast Colonization
Liquid culture distributes living mycelium throughout the inoculated material, giving it multiple points from which to grow.

Compact Storage
Culture syringes take up very little refrigerator space.

Easy Inoculation
The syringe allows culture to be injected directly through a self-healing injection port.

Expandable
Liquid culture can be used to inoculate sterile grain or expanded into additional liquid culture.

Long Storage Life
Properly refrigerated liquid culture can remain viable for up to approximately 12 months.

📦 What's Included

  • One 10 mL liquid culture syringe
  • Selected mushroom strain
  • Supplemented liquid culture medium
  • Directions

🧫 Recommended Use

As a general starting point:

  • Grain jar: 1–2 mL
  • 1 lb / 450 g grain bag: 1–3 mL
  • 2.2 lb / 1 kg grain bag: 3–5 mL

🛠 Basic Inoculation

  1. Sterilize your grain or other appropriate substrate in a bag or container with a self-healing injection port.
  2. Allow it to cool completely.
  3. Inject the recommended amount of liquid culture through the injection port using sterile technique.
  4. Allow the inoculated material to colonize at approximately 70°F.
  5. Colonization speed varies by mushroom species, strain, substrate, and growing conditions.

❄️ Storage

Keep your liquid culture refrigerated when not in use.

Properly stored liquid culture can remain viable for up to approximately 12 months. Avoid freezing.

💡 Mushroom Mountain Tip

A little liquid culture goes a long way. Using more culture isn't necessarily better — excess liquid can add unnecessary moisture to grain. Start with the recommended amount and give the mycelium time to do what it does best.

What is mushroom liquid culture?
Liquid culture is living mushroom mycelium suspended in a sterile, nutrient-rich liquid solution. It can be used to inoculate sterile grain or for further liquid culture expansion.
What comes with my order?
Each order contains one 10 mL syringe of your selected commercial-grade mushroom culture in supplemented liquid medium, plus directions.
Is Liquid Culture ready to grow mushrooms?
No. Liquid culture is an inoculant used as part of the mushroom cultivation process. It must first be introduced into an appropriate sterile medium such as grain.
Do I need sterile technique to use Liquid Culture?
Yes. Clean handling and sterile technique are important when inoculating grain or expanding liquid culture because contamination can compete with the mushroom mycelium.
How much Liquid Culture should I use?
As a general guideline, use 1–2 mL for a grain jar, 1–3 mL for a 1 lb (450 g) grain bag, or 3–5 mL for a 2.2 lb (1 kg) grain bag.
Can I use Liquid Culture to make grain spawn?
Yes. Liquid culture can be used to inoculate properly sterilized grain, which can then colonize into grain spawn.
Can I use Liquid Culture to make more Liquid Culture?
Yes. It can be used for liquid culture expansion when appropriate sterile procedures and media are used.
How should I store Liquid Culture?
Keep the syringe refrigerated when not in use. Properly refrigerated liquid culture can remain viable for up to approximately 12 months. Do not freeze it.
What temperature should I use for colonization?
Approximately 70°F is a good general colonization temperature for these cultures. Individual species and strains may vary.
How long does colonization take?
Colonization time varies according to species, strain, grain or substrate, inoculation rate, and environmental conditions.
Does the syringe contain mushroom spores?
No. Liquid culture contains living mushroom mycelium rather than a mushroom spore solution.
Is Liquid Culture good for beginners?
It can be a good next step for growers learning to make their own grain spawn, but it requires sterile technique and sterilized grain. Beginners who want the simplest growing experience may prefer prepared spawn or a fruiting kit.
What is a self-healing injection port?
It is a specialized port on a grain bag or container that allows a sterile needle to pass through and then reseals after the needle is removed, helping protect the contents from contamination.
Can I inject Liquid Culture directly into an outdoor mushroom log?
Liquid culture is intended primarily for sterile grain inoculation or culture expansion. For outdoor log cultivation, plug spawn or sawdust spawn is generally the more practical choice.
Is there a quantity discount?
Yes. Buy four Liquid Cultures and receive $25 off.
