A Traditional Northern Mushroom with a Deep, Earthy Character

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) has been brewed and enjoyed for generations throughout Siberia, Russia, Northern Europe, and other cold northern regions, where it has a long history in traditional wellness practices.

Unlike the familiar cap-and-stem mushrooms, Chaga forms a hard, dark mass called a sclerotium, most commonly on birch trees in cold climates. Its almost charred-looking exterior gives way to a rusty brown interior packed with naturally occurring fungal and plant-derived compounds.

Our Chaga is carefully dried and ground into a convenient powder that's ready for teas, coffee, cacao, broths, and other mushroom preparations.

🍄 Why Chaga?

Chaga has become one of the most popular traditional mushrooms for brewing because of its mild flavor and long history of use as a tea.

  • 🌿 Long History of Traditional Use – Chaga has been prepared in northern folk traditions for generations.
  • 🔬 Naturally Occurring Compounds – Chaga contains polysaccharides, polyphenols, melanin, and other compounds that continue to be studied.
  • Made for Brewing – Its earthy, relatively mild flavor makes Chaga especially well suited for teas, coffee, cacao, and warm beverages.
  • 🍫 Easy to Pair – Chaga works beautifully with cacao, cinnamon, vanilla, maple, coffee, and warming spices.

What Does Chaga Taste Like?

Despite its dramatic black appearance, Chaga isn't overwhelmingly mushroomy.

Its flavor is earthy, smooth, mildly bitter, and subtly woody, making it much easier to incorporate into beverages than strongly bitter mushrooms such as Reishi.

Flavor Profile:
Earthy • Smooth • Woody • Slightly Bitter

🥄 How to Use Chaga Powder

Chaga powder can be added to:

  • Mushroom tea
  • Coffee
  • Cacao and hot chocolate
  • Chai
  • Broths
  • Smoothies
  • Mushroom blends
  • Warm plant-based milks

For hot preparations, gently simmering the Chaga allows it to brew into the liquid.

☕ Make a Simple Chaga Tea

Add Chaga powder to water and gently simmer for approximately 15–30 minutes.

Strain if desired and enjoy as-is, or add cinnamon, ginger, honey, maple syrup, or your favorite milk.

For a richer drink, combine Chaga with coffee or cacao.

🍫 Hot Chaga Chocolate

Add 1 teaspoon Chaga powder and 1 cup milk of your choice to a small saucepan.

Cover and gently simmer for about 15 minutes.

Add:

1½ tablespoons coconut oil
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1½ tablespoons maple syrup or sweetener of choice
Splash of vanilla extract

Whisk until smooth and pour into your favorite mug.

Earthy Chaga + chocolate + vanilla is a very good combination.
