Protect Your Spawn While Your Logs Colonize
After inoculating mushroom logs with plug spawn or sawdust spawn, sealing the inoculation holes helps protect the newly introduced mycelium while it begins colonizing the wood.
Our soy wax is easy to melt and brush over inoculation holes, creating a protective barrier that helps prevent the spawn from drying out and keeps insects from entering the holes.
That protection gives the mycelium time to grow from the spawn and establish itself inside the log.
🍄 Great For
- Mushroom log inoculation
- Plug spawn
- Sawdust spawn
- Shiitake logs
- Oyster mushroom logs
- Lion's Mane logs
- Other log-grown mushroom species
🌳 Why Wax Your Mushroom Logs?
Freshly inoculated spawn is vulnerable to drying out before the mycelium has a chance to establish itself.
Waxing the inoculation holes helps:
- Retain moisture around the spawn
- Prevent the spawn from drying out
- Keep insects out of inoculation holes
- Protect newly inoculated areas
- Give mycelium time to colonize the surrounding wood
🔥 How to Use
After drilling and filling your holes with plug or sawdust spawn:
- Gently melt the soy wax.
- Brush or dab melted wax over each inoculation hole.
- Completely cover the exposed spawn.
- Allow the wax to cool and harden.
- Move your inoculated logs to their shaded colonization area.
📦 What's Included
1 lb Soy Wax
Enough wax for multiple mushroom log inoculation projects. The exact number of logs will depend on log size, number of inoculation holes, and how heavily the wax is applied.
