The Mushroom of Immortality
Reishi (Ganoderma spp.) has one of the longest histories of use of any medicinal mushroom. Known as Lingzhi (灵芝) in China and often called the “Mushroom of Immortality,” Reishi has been treasured for centuries in traditional wellness practices.
Unlike culinary mushrooms, Reishi isn't something you're going to sauté for dinner. Its fruiting body is dense, woody, and naturally bitter—which is exactly why it is traditionally prepared as a long-simmered tea, decoction, powder, or extract.
Our dried Reishi is available in slices or finely ground powder, giving you two simple ways to incorporate this remarkable mushroom into your own preparations.
🍄 Why Reishi?
Reishi contains naturally occurring fungal compounds including beta-glucans, polysaccharides, and triterpenes, compounds that have made Ganoderma species an important subject of modern mushroom research.
Reishi also has a long history of traditional use associated with:
- 🌿 General wellness
- 🛡️ Immune system support
- 🧘 Adaptogenic and stress-support practices
- 🌙 Evening relaxation rituals
- ☕ Traditional teas and decoctions
Rather than being prized for its flavor, Reishi has historically been valued for what is contained within that tough, bitter fruiting body.
What Does Reishi Taste Like?
There's really no getting around this one:
Reishi is bitter. 😂
That bitterness is characteristic of the mushroom, particularly its naturally occurring triterpenes.
Its flavor is:
Earthy • Woody • Bitter • Deep
Pair it with warming ingredients such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cacao, orange peel, or honey if you prefer a more balanced drink.
🍄 Reishi Slices
Whole Reishi fruiting bodies are dried and sliced, making them ideal for tea, decoctions, broths, and homemade mushroom preparations.
How to Make Reishi Tea
Add Reishi slices to water and gently simmer rather than simply steeping them like ordinary tea.
For a basic preparation:
Add dried Reishi slices to water and simmer gently for 30–60 minutes. Strain the mushroom pieces before drinking.
The longer Reishi simmers, the stronger—and usually more bitter—the resulting tea becomes.
You can combine it with ginger, cinnamon, orange peel, or other herbs and spices.
Can You Eat the Reishi Slices?
Technically they're mushroom fruiting bodies, but you're probably not going to want to chew them.
Reishi has a tough, corky-to-woody texture, even after drying and simmering. The slices are intended primarily for extraction into liquids rather than being eaten like Shiitake or Maitake.

🍄 Reishi Mushroom Powder
Our Reishi Powder is dried Reishi fruiting body ground into a convenient powder for teas, broths, smoothies, mushroom blends, and culinary preparations.
Because this is whole mushroom powder rather than an extract, it contains the ground mushroom material itself.
How to Use Reishi Powder
Reishi powder can be added to:
- Mushroom teas
- Chai
- Coffee
- Cacao
- Broths
- Soups
- Smoothies
- Herbal blends
Because Reishi is naturally bitter, start small and adjust according to taste.
For hot preparations, allowing the powder to simmer provides a very different preparation than simply stirring it into a finished beverage.
